Primary Function of Position:
Systems Analysts at Intuitive Surgical perform a central role in the design, development, and support of new products in the daVinci Surgery ® product line. Systems Analysts are primarily responsible for the safety systems, control algorithms, haptic interface, and user interface for new surgical robots. This responsibility crosses into electrical, mechanical, software, control, user interface, and safety engineering where all the subsystems are integrated together. Systems Analysts strive to provide early design input, quickly prove out new designs and concepts, and seek out and discover hidden and challenging problems in the system integration. Responsibilities continue until the products are shipping to customers with the highest quality and reliability.
Roles and Responsibilities: Responsibilities of the team comprise:
- Deliver world-class teleoperation solutions with unprecedented immediacy and fidelity
- Develop and prove the reliability of control algorithms that transform hardware into the extension of a surgeon’s hands while hiding inertia, friction, backlash, hysteresis, time delay, joint limits, singularities, and the like from the surgeon experience
- Analyze complex electro-mechanical devices for dynamic safety and clinical risk and create safety monitoring algorithms based on sound physics
- Provide analytic assistance to other engineering groups
- Build a simple and elegant man-machine interface to a complex system that monitors hundreds of sensors in real time and controls over 40 powered degrees of freedom
- Participate in clinical observations as well as experiments to ensure that internal performance requirements are relevant and realistic
- Assist in the verification and validation testing of new products
- Communicate system performance to the organization as a whole
This position has responsibility and authority for:
- Quickly become expert in the control and safety algorithms
- Provide critical analysis of robot servo control
- Contribute to the design of new robot manipulators, surgical instruments, and surgeon interfaces through analysis and prototyping in software and hardware
- Facilitate mechanical, hardware, and software integration of new prototypes and new products including complete systems, manipulators, and vision
- Document and communicate intellectual property
- Perform safety analysis and testing of physical hardware
- Support and track system performance as it moves from design to manufacturing
- Assist manufacturing with technical
- Give analytical assistance for other engineering issues
- Improve group work-flow through tool building and teaching others
Competency Requirements: (Competency is based on: education, training, skills and experience.)
In order to adequately perform the responsibilities of this position the individual must:
- Doctorate in EE, ME, or Masters with 4 - 6 years of industrial experience
- Possess strong embedded C programming capabilities as well as hardware, software, and mechanism integration skills
- Understand and have experience implementing standard and modern servo control systems
- Be creative and able to generate a diversity of solutions to a problem
- Be detail oriented and able to develop and push a single solution to completion
- Excel in a high-energy team
- Demonstrate excellent communication skills both written and verbal
- Work independently while simultaneously balancing collaboration on project planning and communication
- Show passion for product quality and continuous improvements
- Possess a determination to get through challenging problems
