DUTY DESCRIPTION: Performs general duty jail work in the caring for and maintaining of custody of inmates and in the providing of security for the Ada County Jail. Performs related work as required. The incumbent uses their own judgment in the performance of duties, referring unusual, unique or complex issues to their supervisor for advice and guidance. Position is located in the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Jail and Court Services Bureau.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Maintains routine security checks as policy dictates;
· Preserves and enforces Idaho laws and departmental jail policies to maintain security of the jail;
· Receives inmates from officers and the courts;
· Processes inmates into the jail, takes inmates' fingerprints, and assigns them to the proper level of confinement;
· Maintains security and custody of prisoners;
· Receives and maintains inmates' property;
· Supervises inmate visitations;
· Dispenses medication to inmates as prescribed by the jail physician;
· Supervises the dispensing of food in a timely fashion to inmates;
· Supervises inmates and trustee-inmates in the cleaning of the jail and inmate living quarters;
· Performs necessary searches for weapons and contraband;
· Keeps records and prepares reports;
· Inspects perimeter of the building and grounds for security purposes;
· Detention Officers may be assigned to special details as needed; and
· Performs related work as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
· High school diploma or equivalent;
· Must be at least 21 years of age;
· Knowledge of policies and procedures used to operate a jail facility;
· Knowledge of how to search for contraband/weapons and what can be used as a weapon;
· Knowledge of first-aid/CPR techniques;
· Ability to supervise and communicate with inmates;
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing;
· Ability to take criticism and verbal abuse from inmates and their visitors without reacting in a negative manner and project an image of self-confidence and control;
· Ability to 'read' people and/or potential adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy; and
· Ability to perform the duties of the position without a direct threat to the health or safety of the incumbent or others.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Must pass a written exam with a score of 70% or better,
· Must pass the POST physical agility test and a psychological exam;
· Must appear before an oral board; and complete a polygraph, background check and medical exam prior to reporting for duty;
· Must become POST certified as a Detention Officer within one year of hire.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Most of the work is performed in and around the jail facility and involves an element of personal danger;
· Requires sufficient physical strength to subdue an inmate in time of confrontation or break up a fight between inmates;
· Must be able to remove an unconscious person from the jail in time of emergency, hold up an inmate attempting to take his/her life and move quickly to the point of confrontation, and
· Must be able to use first-aid and CPR techniques when necessary.
Preference in appointment will be given to eligible veterans.
