DUTY DESCRIPTION: Patrols designated areas, determines if a crime has been committed, enforces laws, writes citations, investigates traffic accidents, makes arrests, and transports arrestee; performs related duties as required. The incumbent uses their own judgment in the performance of duties, referring unusual, unique or complex issues to their supervisor for advice and guidance. The position is located in the Ada County Sheriff's Office, Police Services Bureau, Patrol Division.
PRIMARY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
· Patrols assigned areas of Ada County on foot, on a motorcycle, or in a radio-equipped car to preserve order, prevent and discover crime, direct traffic, and enforce motor vehicle and parking regulations;
· Responds to calls and complaints involving fire, automobile accidents, robberies, neighborhood disturbances, and other misdemeanors and felonies;
· Interviews persons with complaints and inquiries and makes proper disposition;
· Administers first-aid;
· Interviews witnesses, gathers information and prepares detailed accident reports;
· Secures crime scenes, conducts preliminary investigations, gathers and processes evidence, obtains witnesses, and makes arrests;
· Takes disputed property into possession of the court;
· Testifies as a witness in court in connection with arrests and citations;
· Gives advice on laws and ordinances and general information to the general public;
· Educates public in crime prevention;
· May investigate cases related to fraud, forgery, embezzlement, runaways, assaults, vandalism, burglaries, larcenies, child neglect and abuse, vice controlled substances, sex offenses, suicides and homicides;
· As assigned, participates in the Selected Traffic Enforcement Program;
· As required, provides on the job training to new patrol officers;
· May serve warrants and take person(s) in to custody;
· May be assigned to work on special assignments as investigators, plainclothes officers, or community relations officers; and
· Performs related duties as required.
JOB SPECIFICATIONS:
· Must have either 64 college credits or an Associates Degree from an accredited college or university OR have served 4 years consecutive and fulltime military service OR have 2 years of prior fulltime experience in law enforcement with a recognized public safety agency as a commissioned or licensed law enforcement officer;
· Must be at least 21 years of age;
· Knowledge of the appropriate sections of the Idaho Code;
· Knowledge of English grammar, spelling and punctuation;
· Knowledge of first-aid and CPR techniques;
· Skill in the peaceful resolution of conflict and the diffusion of tense situations;
· Skill in the use of a firearm;
· Skill in the safe operation of passenger cars and vans under hazardous conditions;
· Ability to understand and interpret Idaho criminal laws and department policy in a field setting;
· Ability to memorize large amounts of information relating to policies, procedures, laws and police operations;
· Ability to determine probable cause;
· Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing and prepare clear, comprehensive reports;
· Ability to give accurate and convincing testimony in court;
· Ability to take criticism and verbal abuse from persons without reacting in a negative manner;
· Ability to project an image of self-confidence and control;
· Ability to 'read' people and/or potential adverse or unsafe situations and react according to department policy;
· Ability to perform the duties of the position without a direct threat to the health or safety of the incumbent or others.
OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
· Must possess and maintain a current Idaho Drivers License;
· Must pass a written exam with a score of 70% or better;
· Must pass the POST physical agility test and a psychological exam;
· Must appear before an oral board and complete a polygraph, background check and medical exam before reporting for duty;
· Must become POST certified as a Peace Officer within one year of hire.
WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
· Work is performed primarily on and around the roadways of Ada County and involves an element of personal danger;
· May require incumbent to ride in a car for long periods of time;
· Requires sufficient physical strength to extract injured persons from a wide variety of situations and to apprehend, search, and arrest individuals, some of whom may resist;
· May require movement over various types of terrain, (hilly, steep, rocky, rough, and/or wet/slippery);
· Requires the use of first-aid and CPR techniques when necessary;
· Must be able to work all work shifts as well as weekends and holidays, may involve long days.
