The Coding Team Leader, under the supervision of the Business Office Director, is responsible to direct, coordinate and plan work for the coding staff.  This includes, but is not limited to, schedules, training, the technical services and skills of the coding staff, the development of the coding procedures and guidelines, monitoring activities and workflow of the coding staff.  This position is responsible for ensuring Dean Health Systems Inc.’s coding and documentation practices are compliant with CPT, ICD, HCPCS, Federal and third party payer guidelines.  This position is responsible for meeting department goals, quality standards, updating workflows and protocols, performance evaluations, training of new employees, hiring and disciplinary action.  Another responsibility of this position is to develop and implement coding/documentation training for all physicians and advanced practitioners. 

Qualifications:

Required:  

  1. Bachelors degree with coding certification and a minimum of 2 years of medical office, clinic, or business experience OR an Associate degree with coding certification and 5-7 years of medical office, clinic, or business experience OR a high school diploma  with the successful completion of a coding program, certification as a RHIA, RHIT, CPC or CCS-P and 7-9 years of medical office, clinic, or business office experience.
  2. Of the above experience, a minimum of one year management or leadership experience.
  3. Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  4. Detailed knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology and disease process.
  5. Detailed knowledge of a medical record content and how to interpret its contents.
  6. Detailed knowledge of all CPT, ICD and HCPCS coding.
  7. Knowledge of reimbursement practices for physician services.
  8. Ability to work independently.
  9. Must be proficient with medical record reviews.
  10. Ability to work well in busy area with constant interruptions.
  11. Personal computer software experience.

Preferred:

  1. Familiarity with an electronic medical record.
  2. Familiarity with databases.
  3. Process improvement experience.

  1. Ability to sit for extended periods while on the phone or computer (greater than 4 hours / day).

  4. Ability to work on a ladder while retrieving files
  5. Ability to hear and converse on the phone and in person.
  6. Ability to safely lift and to push/pull boxes, books or equipment weighing up to 20 pounds.
  7. Ability to safely operate a personal motor vehicle on a weekly basis and comply with the Company’s Vehicle Safety Program.
