Job Description

The Director of Medical Economics and Analytics’ primary responsibilities will be managing the day-to-day operations of Dean Health Plan’s Medical Analytics group and providing system analytical leadership support for development and maintenance of a system wide Medical Economics function. He/she will also be responsible for all human and technical resource managerial responsibilities associated with Medical Economics data, reporting and analytics.

This position will provide a strategic vision by establishing and executing a vision for the delivery of information and analytics solutions to Dean Health Plan’s key stakeholders including owners, employer groups, members, providers, and internal staff related to medical benefit spend and system wide medical economics.  This role is responsible for executing this vision by leveraging the enterprise-wide data warehouse adoption of business intelligence and reporting tools, and the delivery of reporting and analytical solutions to the system.  In this role, he/she will work in conjunction with the leaders of the integrated health system to promote high quality, cost effective care for our members by helping to define and lead a Medical Economics practice.

The Director of Medical Economics and Analytics is responsible for defining the needs of key stakeholders and the business as they relate to information reporting, analysis, and distribution, and using the resources of the Medical Affairs Informatics Team to deliver solutions that meet or exceed these expectations.  Through the strategic use of information, this position will help create competitive advantages for Dean Health Plan and the larger integrated delivery system to contribute to strategies that deliver high quality, cost effective medical care for our members and patients throughout the system.

Job Duties:

  • Work with leaders throughout DHP, DHS, SSM to develop a comprehensive, integrated all-payer medical economics department with appropriate discrete or common functions as dictated by regulators and or the business needs of the partners.
  • Proactively identify, communicate, and coordinate organizational initiatives related to healthcare cost/trend opportunities and risks throughout the system.
  • Work as part of a leadership team with the Medical Director for Medical Cost Trends (MCT) to design and develop sound data-based tools and applications necessary to efficiently measure, monitor, and/or forecast Dean Health Plan’s and the system medical cost structure  which are necessary to identify opportunities for care delivery with improvement in cost and quality.
  • Works closely with actuarial services as a key partner is designing, preparing and producing reports related to medical spend at the plan level and driving an overall management process to analyze the components of medical cost trend.
  • Responsible for the development, motivation, assessment and reward of subordinate managers, team leaders and employees. Possesses and applies broad management expertise in planning, integrating and leading staff in the implementation of programs or initiatives which are strategic in nature.

Required Skills/Experience:

  • Masters degree in a field related to medical economics, epidemiology or medical analytics
  • Typically has 10 to 15 years of business and/or technology work experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in managing medical economics teams and projects
  • Significant experience in a work environment requiring substantial interaction with multiple levels of an organization (CEO, COO, direct operations, middle management, and senior management)
  • Strong health insurance/managed care and care delivery system industry knowledge/experience including experience with the practical uses and applications of healthcare data
  • Skilled at influencing senior level management and key stakeholders
  • Experience in strategic planning, development, implementation and maintenance of large-scale integrated business intelligence and data warehouse systems.
  • Experience with process and data modeling, data architectural development methodology, and data warehousing technology
  • Experience running large data centric projects
  • Demonstrated ability to build structures and systems related to Medical Economics in the broadest sense.
  • Strong independent decision-making skills. Converts strategic direction to specific action plans.
  • Builds strong cross-functional relationships
