Job Description

STG International is currently acceping resumes for Registered Nurses that would be interested in a PART-TIME or a PRN position where services would be provided in the Mother/Baby unit at Martin Army Community Hospital in Ft. Benning, GA.  

The RNs performing services under this contract shall have sufficient general knowledge and experience to adequately perform all nursing duties, to include, but not limited to, the following:

  • Performs initial evaluations and screenings of the obstetrical patient to determine the priority of the treatment and identifies life-threatening conditions that require immediate attention of the obstetrical physician/nursing staff and responds accordingly.
  • Assesses maternal history, allergies, and present status to identify contraindication to specific medications and procedures.
  • Performs one to one monitoring of the high risk obstetrical patient.
  • Responds to Cardiac/Respiratory Arrests according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Assesses normal pregnancy variations as well as high risk complications and maladaptive behaviors and provide care accordingly.
  • Performs vaginal examinations to accurately determine cervical dilation, effacement, fetal station, and presenting part. 
  • Differentiates between normal and abnormal rate of cervical effacement and dilatation, and descent of the presenting part, and initiates appropriate nursing interventions.
  • Monitors uterine activity patterns using palpation and/or the electronic fetal monitor.
  • Assists in placement and troubleshooting of external and internal monitors.
  • Performs and documents maternal surveillance, including measures blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations per unit protocol.
  • Recognizes normal, reactive, non-reactive, non-stress test or positive/negative contraction stimulation test or oxytocin challenge test and implements interventions as needed.
  • Monitors mother and fetus for desired and deleterious effects of administered medications.
  • Provides nursing management of Cytotec, dinoprostone cerviacal ripening, and pitocin induction/ augmentation, based on patient status and contractions.
  • Recognizes the signs and symptoms and provides appropriate nursing intervention for the following obstetrical emergencies; placenta previa, placenta abruptio, prolapsed cord, uterine rupture, inverted uterus, seizures, post partum hemorrhage, shoulder dystocia, preterm labor.
  • Provides nursing care and management of preeclamptic patient, DIC, HELLP Syndrome and other life threatening conditions related to preeclampsia.
  • Administers and manages Magnesium Sulfate IV infusion and assesses for signs of Magnesium Sulfate toxicity and provides appropriate nursing care.
  • Administers and manages the patient on an insulin infusion.
  • Assists with anesthesia administration and monitoring of mother/fetus for desired and undesired responses. 
  • Identifies effects and side effects of each method of analgesia and anesthesia and promptly initiates appropriates nursing interventions.
  • Provides emergency neonatal care/NRP stabilization immediately after the delivery as needed and assigns APGAR scores in collaboration with attending physician.
  • Assists with emergency Cesarean Section to include room set-up, patient preparation and circulate during surgery.
  • Prepares equipment and assists with amnioinfusion procedures.
  • Assists with amniocentesis and ultrasound.
  • Provides labor and post partum patient teaching including plan of care, episiotomy care, breast care, initiation of breast feeding.
  • Familiar with charge nurse duties, responsibilities include: monitors and oversees staff performance to assure work is accomplished in a timely and efficient manner.
  • Makes legible, accurate and complete nursing documentation and ensures the same from staff mentored.
  • Provides or ensures appropriate patient education occurs during shift.
  • Reviews and revises nursing care plans as needed.
  • Verifies and annotates all physicians’ orders written during the shift.
  • Notifies attending physicians of significant change in patient’s conditions in a timely manner.
  • Provides comprehensive nursing care to patients based on physician’s medical care plan, and the physical, mental, and emotional needs of the patient.
  • Administers oxygen, IV fluid, blood transfusion and prescribed oral, subcutaneous,  intramuscular, IV medications.
  • Sets-up, operates and monitors specialized equipment such as cardiac monitors, defibrillator, oxygen monitors, fetal monitors, IV pumps, electrocardiogram machines, blood glucose monitors, syringe pumps, etc.
  • Performs nasal-pharyngeal and gastric suction as well as a variety of other drainage tubes.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care and recognizes abnormal signs and symptoms of the postpartum vaginal and C-section recovering patients.
  • Recognizes life-threatening conditions that requires the immediate attention of the physician/nurse and responds accordingly; assists in developing unit-level standards of care.
  • Reports and analyzes unusual occurrences to reduce patient risk and prevent hospital liability.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care to newborn infants in transition period; recognizes signs and systems of abnormal or emergency situations.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care, education and support to breastfeeding mothers.
  • Provides comprehensive patient teaching for self and infant care.
  • Performs newborn transitions.
  • Assists with Foley Bulb placement.
  • Provides appropriate nursing care and support to patients and family members experiencing perinatal loss and bereavement.
  • Performs sterile and non-sterile vaginal speculum exams to rule out rupture of membranes.
  • Supports organization’s Patient Family Centered Care initiatives.
  • Practice organization’s behavioral objectives and good customer services.
  • Shall use the AHLTA or CHCS for keeping records, ordering of ancillary procedures and performing other required patient record functions.
  • Shall verify the content and correctness of all prepared and transcribed reports by electronically signing the document and validating its contents within CHCS and AHLTA.
  • The HCP shall document appropriate history, physical examination, required laboratory and x-ray examinations, and preliminary diagnosis (as appropriate) prior to the performance of any healthcare treatment.
  • The HCP shall ensure that the MEPRS code assigned to the clinic appears on all consults, lab requests, x-ray requests, etc.  The Department/Service Chief shall provide this code.
  • The HCP will attend medical and administrative meetings as designated by the Department/Service Chief.  The HCP shall attend any additional special meetings called by the MACH Commander as required to discuss the HCP’s credentials, quality control issues, or emergency situations.
  • The HCP shall provide and document advice to patients by telephone as appropriate and in accordance with MACH protocol. 
  • The HCP shall respond to all emergency codes, including cardiopulmonary arrests, and summon appropriate backup from the clinical and hospital staff.  In these situations, provide professional advice to staff with regard to the professional management of the patient as necessary.

Required Skills
  • The HCP shall possess and maintain an unrestricted U.S. state license in his/her specialty. The HCP shall not work with expired license.
  • The HCP shall have two years of current clinical experience prior to commencement of services under this contract.
  • The HCP shall have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS), and Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certifications. The HCP shall not work with expired certifications.
  • The HCP shall be knowledgeable in all areas that are, as a standard, covered by any accredited National League of Nursing (NLN) training program.
  • The HCP shall have knowledge of professional trends and development of equipment and devices that are applicable to providing services.
  • The HCP shall be able to read, write, and speak English well enough to effectively communicate with patients, family members and other HCPs.

Note: The HCP must show proof of U. S. Citizenship (certified copy of birth certificate or naturalization papers) or U.S. work authorization documents. 

The HCP shall have knowledge of professional trends and development of equipment and devices that are applicable to providing services. The HCP shall be required to meet Continuing Medical Education (CME) requirements for his/her specialty. 

The HCP must have basic computer skills and should be a competent typist as there is a requirement to complete documentation in the MACH’s electronic health record system. The HCP must be able to effectively log on and off, shutdown, and restart the computer system. The HCP must also be able to change network passwords, and know the difference between various application passwords and their network password. The HCP must be able to handle minor application problems, e.g. frozen software applications. The HCP must be able to effectively use the right hand mouse buttons for quick menu access and navigate in a Windows environment. The HCP must be able to open and save a file from a disk or the hard drive; this may be demonstrated by opening previously saved files, e.g. saved from/to any drive or directory. The HCP must be able to delete unwanted files, copy or move files as needed between drives and directories, and create folders/directories as necessary to complete the desired task. The HCP must be able to start an application, switch between applications, create backup files, and print documents by using a stand alone or networked printer.

Required Experience
  • RN with one (1) year high risk labor and delivery experience 

AND/OR

  • RN with two (2) years experience in a community hospital with at least 1,000 deliveries per year.
  • Shall have a BSN degree or greater level of education from a National League of Nursing (NLN) accredited college or university.
