Sells building materials and/or maintenance supplies to builders, businesses and industrial establishments by performing the following duties.
Compiles lists of prospective customers for use as sales leads, based on information from newspapers, business directories, industry ads, trade shows, Internet Web sites, and other sources. Travels throughout assigned area to call on regular and prospective customers to solicit orders, or talks with customers by phone. Uses in-depth knowledge of product application to assist customers in selecting product for their business. Quotes prices and credit terms and prepares sales contracts for orders obtained. Assists in monitoring accounts payable for assigned accounts. May be required to assist in the collection of delinquent or default accounts. Estimates date of delivery to customer, based on knowledge of own firm's and supplier's production and delivery schedules. Prepares reports of business transactions and keeps expense accounts. Works with inside sales support to keep account activities and literature up to date. Tracks stock levels. Coordinates customer training. Enters new customer data and other sales data for current customers into computer database. Works with and through corporate, regional and store management and employees to facilitate efficient delivery of product and service to commercial customers. Develops and maintains relationships with purchasing contacts. Investigates and resolves customer problems with deliveries, product quality or service. Attends trade shows.
Bachelor's degree from four-year college or university; or two to four years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, trade journals, technical procedures, or contractual documents. Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and internal communications. Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, customers, and the general public. Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret graphs and charts. Must be able to perform and comprehend basic business and financial calculations. Basic computer skills experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, and retail point-of-sale systems. Basic and intermediate knowledge of building products and local building codes preferred. Meets and adheres to Company driving and licensing requirements for equipment and vehicles. Must be able to use personal vehicle to visit customers, job sites and purchasing offices of prospective and assigned accounts.
