Job Description

RR Donnelley seeks to establish itself as a leader in delivering comprehensive packaging supply chain services. The Manager will be responsible for developing a highly effective structural design and engineering capability as part of this global offering. This leadership position will work directly with clients to develop credibility, define project requirements and then manage extended teams in delivering solutions for a wide variety of consumer packaging.

  • As SME for global packaging responsible for identifying, developing, and implementing innovative structural design and engineering solutions for packaging.
  • Must be able to work collaboratively with larger sales and operational teams to define solution requirements and implement appropriate capabilities and business practices.
  • Must take anticipatory approach to customer needs and constantly challenge self, team and extended organization to exceed expectations across all levels of internal and external client interactions.
  • Interprets internal or external business requirements and recommends best practices.  Anticipates internal and/or external business challenges and/or regulatory issues; recommends process, product, or service improvements.
  • Pro-actively participates in discussing design projects with sales, customers, outside vendors and other departments.
  • Facilitate internal and external resources in execution of project requirements. Owns project timeline management, monitors and initiates project tracking updates. Accountable for timely identification and resolution of issues.
  • Performs work that is technically advanced.  Responsible for solving highly technical or complex problems in compressed timeframes.
  • Supervise structural design team of 2 – 5 employees.
Required Skills
  • Demonstrated experience in developing innovative solutions for folding carton, corrugated and related paperboard based packaging.
  • Experience working in product design and non-paper packaging a significant benefit.
  • Familiarity with solid surface engineering and or 3D modeling for product development needed.
  • Strong presentation, written and oral communication abilities. Comfortable dealing with executive level clients.
  • Demonstrated case studies showing ability to develop solutions that drive material, cube and container optimization benefits.
Required Experience
  • Bachelors and/or advanced degree in package engineering, structural design or industrial design.
  • 5+ years experience in structural design for packaging.
  • Experience working in the technology, retail and/or pharmaceutical industries.
  • Strong experience working with distributed manufacturing teams domestically and internationally.
  • Experience managing testing and verification of packaging materials against ISTA, Euro and EPA requirements.
  • Experience managing sustainability innovations from material, manufacturing and full packaging life-cycle perspectives.
  •  Understanding of evolving country requirements and reporting metrics a definite advantage.
  • Chicago based.
  • Travel 50%.
