Performs all functions of an Engineer, identifying fundamental processes, designing test methods and protocols, collecting and interpreting experimental data, performing systems integration and final testing to ensure reliable and world-class product delivery, plus provides first level of project management. This position functions in a high-level research and development engineering role by providing scientific and technical expertise, and leadership in solving high-visibility technical challenges for the business.
Responsibilities
Work is typically performed under minimal daily supervision, receiving guidance from manager/supervisor about the work that needs to be completed. Able to exercise high level of discretion and latitude in completing tasks.
Develops, executes and analyzes results of experiments, executes proof of principle as well as design verifications to solve technical challenges which face the business.
Provides vision, guidance and strong judgment in researching and developing next generation solutions to complex problems.
Works closely with and often directs cross-function teams of other engineers, scientists, and technicians.
Performs varied work that is substantially varied and complex. Works on diverse scope, which requires in-depth analysis.
Regularly exercises discretion and independent judgment involving complex tasks.
Acts as a resource for colleagues with less experience; may direct the work of other staff members in a mentoring capacity.
Performs other related duties and participates in special projects as assigned.
Specific Duties Include:
- Lead in the development and formulation of inks, fluids, dispersions, solutions and other jettable formulations for both aqueous and piezo ink jet technology.
- Design/specification of jettable ink formulations, and other unique materials, as part of RR Donnelley’s proprietary electronic printing processes.
- Understanding and characterizing the physical interactions occurring at the interfaces of dissimilar materials (i.e., fluids and paper or other material surfaces.)
- Working closely with physicists, chemists, mechanical and electrical engineers in the design and development of cutting-edge electronic printing capabilities and systems.
- Use of specialized analysis and measurement systems in performing unique engineering and scientific studies.
- Taking the lead in producing test plans, conducting process and system testing, and written summary test reports.

1) Advanced degree in engineering (MS or PhD) with 5+ years experience OR bachelor degree in discipline related to functional work or role with 9+ years of relevant work experience.

4) Able to apply strong functional computer knowledge in utilizing Microsoft Windows, MAC, or other technical tools in completing assignments. May require knowledge of or ability to quickly learn specialized software to complete work assignments.

6) Requires very good communication skills with ability to state messages in a clear manner by using language that is easy for others to understand.

9) Experience in Designed Experimental (DOE) procedures and methods required.
Specific Experience Sought:
Minimum of a B.S. in science required; chemistry, chemical engineering, polymer science, or materials science preferred, with a very strong knowledge of good laboratory practices & relevant research experience required. Experience to the M.S. or Ph.D. level would be highly desirable. Direct experience in the formulation and development of ink jet fluids is required. Must posses a working knowledge of analytical methodologies and standard analytical techniques (FTIR, Chromatography, Surface Tension, etc.) Requires diligence, good judgment, meticulous attention to detail and the ability to balance multiple tasks and priorities.
